In 1888 there were fewer than a dozen golfers in the United States ; by 1975, more than fourteen million Americans were playing on more than 11,000 golf courses in all parts of the country.

In 1953, forty-three lawn articles appeared in popular magazines, followed by forty-five in 1955. The record number for any previous year was twenty in 1928.

In 1964, it was estimated that Americans invested almost as much in their lawns as in foreign military assistance.

In 1989 more than 500,000 people made their living directly from the turf care and maintenance, and turf grass was a $25 billion industry.
